The mission of the U.S. Man and the Biosphere Program (U.S. MAB) is to foster harmonious relationships between humans and the biosphere through an international program of policy-relevant research that integrates the social, physical, and biological sciences to address actual problems. The program is organized into six directorates: Biosphere Reserves; High Latitude Ecosystems; Human-Dominated Systems; Marine and Coastal Ecosystems; Temperate Ecosys- tems; and Tropical Ecosystems. U.S. MAB is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture- Forest Service, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Depart- ment of the Interior-National Park Service, the U.S. Department of State, the Agency for International Development, the Envi- ronmental Protection Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Biological Survey, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Peace Corps, and the Smithsonian Institution.
