T his Plant Guide has been developed to help you with the selection and placement of plants for a Xeriscape. A brochure in the back of this guide explains the Xeriscape concept. When used together, the guide and the brochure will help you create a beautiful and water-efficient landscape. One of the most important steps in landscape design is putting the right plant in the right place. Considerations for proper placement include: mature height, growth rate, salt tolerance, light requirements, water requirements, water availability and temperature tolerances. Future problems such as disease, overgrowth, constant wilting and nutrient deficiencies can be avoided if care is taken at this step. When properly placed, plants will be healthier and their water efficiency will be improved. The guide contains information about 247 plant species, cross referenced by common and scientific name. Generally, these plants can be found in nurseries within their respective temperature ranges. Native plants are available but may be harder to locate. There are significant temperature changes between the northern and southern areas in the District. One feature that makes the Plant Guide unique is its temperature zone map. This map divides central Florida into five separate zones based on typical yearly low temperatures. Additionally, water requirements for each plant correspond with the classifications described in the Xeriscape brochure. These water requirements are described as: oasis, drought tolerant or natural. Oasis plants require frequent irrigation. Drought tolerant plants occasionally need supplemental irrigation, while natural plants can survive on normal rainfall. An oasis plant may become drought tolerant if adapted to the shade. Remember, almost all plants need frequent irrigation when first planted. Many native plants have been classified as oasis because of their native habitat. These plants are native to swamps, stream banks or areas with periodic flooding. The oasis classification doesn't necessarily mean these native plants need frequent watering, rather they may thrive in poorly drained areas. By following the principles in the Xeriscape brochure and utilizing the information in this Plant Guide, you will save much more than water. Your fertilizer and maintenance expenses as well as your time spent gardening will be significantly reduced. The greatest benefit is the pride you will have in your successful landscape. uction
