2- Denunciar. III. Hip Hop Literary Discourse: Critical Horizon of an Emergent Epistemology Yohamna Depestre, aka Yohamna Zona Franca, is an Afro-Cuban writer and performance artist now being translated into English by several translators. She is a member of the Cuban group Zona Franca, appearing in the journal of the Hiphop Nation 2000 festival of Cuban rap; the group has been closely associated with that festival since its initiation in 1990. A year ago, she sent me the entirety of her short story manuscript through an email attachment. Since then we have engaged in email dialogues centered around her work and its connection to performance, rap, Hip Hop, trova, American literature, and African-Cuban culture. We attempted to articulate the critical sources and dimensions of her work and to acknowledge formal influences on her narratives. My goal was to cultivate a critical discourse around her work. Depestre and I ruminated over the connections between oral and written language.
