Each snake was given a unique identification number by clipping or branding ventral and subcaudal scales (Lang 1992). Scale clips, injuries, and unusual scale patterns were drawn on a standardized data form for cross-reference. Snakes were released the following day in the vicinity of where they were trapped. In 1990, the same areas were sampled using the same general techniques except that all sites were not sampled simultaneously.
