while a maritime superiority remains to
the former, could be little, if in any way,
benefited by the circumstance. Indeed it
will possibly be not too much to assert,
that the people of the Spanish colonies
generally would very cheerfully wave all
pretensions of the kind, for the advantage
of obtaining an extension of mercantile
intercourse, by which the manufactures
of Britain might more readily reach
them, and for which they at all times
discover the most eager predilection.
