It will be mid-1999 before work will actually begin on Abaco. The cost of the projects on Abaco will be approximately $4.5 million. Three major projects are under consideration. A new well field for the Marsh Harbour area will be installed beyond the airport most of the way to Spring City. This well field will cover a very large area and wells will be equipped with a new more modern type system. The projection is that the new system will satisfactorily supply the area until at least 2015. At a later time a second phase is planned which would provide water to Hope Town, Man-O-War and Guana Cay. The present well field and equipment is basically what was installed in the 1960s and is not adequate for the demands of today. Although improvements have been made, these measures are not enough to fill the demand. The improvements included a large storage tank, a ten-inch main to the center of Marsh Harbour, a _ booster station in Marsh Harbour and larger pipes to Dundas Town and Murphy Town. Also slated for improvements is the water system for the Treasure Cay area. They will be putting in a new well field and will be upgrading the system. This well field will also be very large as eventually in its second phase, the project will include water to Green Turtle Cay. That town has already had water pipes laid prior to the paving of their settlement roads. Other areas which will benefit from this loan will be Casuarina Point which will have a new system to replace their old dilapidated water system. Eventually in the second phase this system will be extended to Cherokee Sound by an under water pipeline. The projects will not take long to complete once the work is begun. The delays involve satisfying the Inter- American Development Bank officials that the work is necessary. Many projects in the Family Islands, more than just the water improvements, are not economically profitable but are necessary for the welfare of the people and for the future development of the islands. The government has to undertake studies to justify the returns they can expect. There is no justification on an economic basis for many projects but Dr. Cant is optimistic that the money will be secured.
