Page 18 ‘The Abaconian June 1998 Visiting Sailors Learn While They Cruise News from Nancy Batchelor Florida Yacht Charters and Sales, located at Boat Harbour, is organizing a Cruise and Learn Flotilla Week to be held July 3rd to 10th for owners of Hunter sailboats. Cruise and Learn is designed to be not only a thoroughly enjoyable sailing excursion but an educational experience. The sponsors of Texaco Mr. Robert Sweeting, MP for South Abaco, praised the efforts of the Albury family and expressed a delight that local investors had been so supportive. He spoke of his memories of growing up when the fuel was in two drums and was dispensed in gallon jugs. He commented on the technological advances in Abaco over the past few years and felt that company’s presence was timely in view of the fact that 50 cars are imported into the Abacos every month from Florida and Nassau. Cheerleaders from the Abaco Central High School basketball team, the Texaco Mighty Marlins, performed during the ceremony. That school has been adopted by Texaco on Abaco and has provided the basketball team with uniforms. About 10:30 p.m. a trail of debris from the capsized boat near Halls Point on Sugarloaf Cay led them to Porgy Rock where Fabian spotted the three men hanging on to ice coolers and the overturned boat. In Fabian’s words, “It was a very moving moment.” Meanwhile, Nurse Letty Martz, of the Hope Town Clinic and is no stranger to rescue operations, was on standby at the clinic to check their vital signs. She reported that some of them had cuts and bruises from coral and were shivering from cold. The leader of this event will be Tom Neal, noted speaker, author and feature writer for Cruising World Magazine. Participants will enjoy informative seminars, festive cocktail parties, dinner receptions at local restaurants and daily sailing trips. Families are welcome and fun events for the kids will include a treasure hunt, snorkeling, a sand castle contest and a dinghy race. The itinerary will take them to Abaco Beach Resort, Guana Cay, Man-O-War, White Sound and Tahiti Beach on Elbow Cay. Seminar topics will include Bahamas navigation tips, provisioning, Bahamas culture and communications. The Police are concerned that there is an upswing in the drug trade through several of the Family Islands, but especially in Bimini. Commissioner of Police B.K. Bonamy said the "corrupt and evil men" who deal in drugs must not be allowed to gain a foothold in The Bahamas again. "You know that they flourished here in the early seventies and eighties," he commented, and we are still suffering at the hand of these inhumane criminals. During the last week in May a large cruising boat, returning to Florida from Bimini, was seized in Fort Lauderdale where police found about two tons of cocaine hidden aboard. A drug-sniffing dog located the drugs which were hidden in the stern between tanks and the hull. This seizure was the largest on a private boat in recent years. Five persons, none of them Bahamian, were arrested.
