Wild Horses Give Birth to a Colt By Bernadette Appleyard A baby was born this week! A little foal was welcomed into the precariously tiny herd of 17 wild horses roaming free under the protection and kind auspices of the Bahamas Star Farms, citrus growers. Glimpsed only once or twice since its birth, we will have to wait until the mother feels safe letting anyone close One of the herd of horses found in the Norman Castle area of Abaco shows curiosity about the person photographing it. Look for upcoming articles announcing a Name the Foal contest and in November a Design a Poster contest, one for students and one for adults to create posters for future fund raising projects. How many places in the world can claim to have their own herd of wild horses? So few that when Marc Paulhus of the Humane Society of the United States, Equine Protection Division, and representatives of the Pegasus Foundation visited Abaco to see the horses in March, they were stunned by their beauty. There is the possibility these horses could be descendants of the Spanish Barb horses, therefore, potentially a herd unique in this part of the world with ancestors going back 250 years. Preserving this wild herd, protecting it, caring for it to ensure the future enjoyment of future generations is within the reach of all Bahamians. Immediate plans include providing a safe enclosure, a paddock, where veterinarians can treat any wounded horses (dog attacks are frequent,) the new foal’s progress can be recorded regularly and accurate counts and state of health can be determined. The horses would be made welcome into the paddock on a weekly basis with special food treats, observed and treated as necessary, then off to their horsey business as usual ... grazing, playing or socializing beneath the shade of the citrus trees. Any donation will be a contribution to this goal. Ask friends and family to help the Abaco Wild Horse Fund collect the $3,000 needed to build this paddock. The horses thank you.
