This scholarship gives an opportunity for one student who has completed at least one year of high school on Abaco to apply. The student will participate in a 10-day expedition coordinated by Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organization in Sandy Point learning about the marine environment and the animals that inhabit it. This year the Rotary Club of Abaco sponsored the scholarship. Pictured here are Mr. Brian Thompson of the Rotary Club, d’Shan Maycock, Environmental Education Officer with Friends, and Alex, this year’s scholarship recipient. The training covered the logistics and the distribution of tasks to the manage- ment team while preparing the shelter and the running of the facilities while in use as well as dealing with possible problems arising from the close contact of people from different backgrounds in a confined environment. The class was dismissed af- ter a full eight hour training period. There was a brief pause for lunch which had been organized by Mrs. Elaine Martinborough with the office of Urban Renewal. The second day was dedicated to learn- ing how to assess the risks facing a com- munity and its vulnerability in case of a disaster and to determine the level of dam- age to property after a disaster had struck. In the case of Abaco the disaster would most likely be a hurricane and its conse- quences such as wind damage, surge and flooding. The participants were also intro- duced to the possibility of other disasters that can occur in the Caribbean, such as volcanic eruptions and earth quakes with their resulting consequences. The class, divided in groups, took part in recognizing and assessing the hazards and the degree of vulnerability resulting from conditions present in a community and was asked to recommend intervention actions which would lessen the risks to the residents. After lunch, the second part of the session concentrated on determinating the various degrees of damage to real es- tate property caused by various disasters, hurricanes, earth quakes and volcanic eruptions and the possibility of repairs. The seminars were once more under the auspice of the Office of U.S. Foreign Di- saster Assistance, of which Mrs. Armbris- ter is the coordinator for The Bahamas. School without leaving the office. The system is very extensive and cost thousands of dol- lars. Mrs. Kumar is very grateful to the PTA Board for such an elaborate yet very needed gift. This is the first time that the school has had this type of system installed and she assured the PTA that the school will make full use of it. This school year is the end of the two- year term for this PTA Board that is made of five other parents and one teacher’s representative. A new PTA Board will be elected in September.
