The group which was comprised of youngsters from under 6 years old to 12 years old, six from Marsh Harbour and 14 from Hope Town, AL | er left Abaco on the ferry on July 5th. “They did well for the strong competition they faced,” explained coach Lawrence Higgs. “They were compet- ing against swimmers who took part in the Carifta events. But term plans for this year are to prepare the kids for the National Competition that will take place next June, he said. Presently ap- proximately eight to 10 children train every day at the Long Bay School pool for com- petitive swimming. To become a competi- tive swimmer, a child has to swim at least three different strokes. The most popular with kids are the breast stroke, free style and back strokes. “Swimming offers a lot psychological and physical benefits for children,” said Coach Higgs. “It is fun and they get to compete year around.” Bodybuilder wins again Veteran bodybuilder, Arthur Elden, competed in three competitions over a three-week period. Following are the com- petitions and results: ¢ The Grand Bahama Championships in Freeport, Grand Bahama, on June 30th - Masters over 60 -1st Place ¢ The Southern States Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on July 14th - Masters over 60 - 3rd Place ¢ The Bahamas National Championships in Nas- sau on July 21st - Masters over 60 -1st Place Please see Sports Page 17 most placed,” he con- firmed. Mr. Higgs, who took over the coaching of the Marsh Harbour team in June when for- mer coach Dominic Latella left, said that his goal is to bring the team from the 10 pres- ently training for com- petition to 20 partici- pants. For that reason, he is planning to visit the schools in Septem- ber to recruit. “I want to get swimmers in every age group, boys and girls,” he said. His short term plans are to get children to participate in the three- mile race in October from Boat Harbour to Hope Town. Abaco’s Little League Baseball Association was formed sev- eral months ago and has upwards of 50 children aged five to 17 participating. Three leagues cater to youth in various age groups. T-ball is for children aged five to eight, Junior League is for those nine to 13 and the Little League is for kids 14 to 17. Games are presently played at the softball field at the Mur- phy Town Park. The league is hoping to establish its own field soon with proper dimensions for the layout.
