Page 4B The Abaconian August 1, 2007 News of the Cays Cays From Page 2 teasing him about that! He was a special guest at Award’s Night this year; and as he gazed out on the crowd, stated that he knew or taught very few people in the au- dience. He also remarked how Hope Town has enjoyed remarkable growth and has become infused with many more families each year. Mrs. Suzanne Bethel, herself a 30-year veteran teacher and principal at Hope Town School, attends each year to present awards from people who once lived here that had enjoyed success in life, such as Dr. George Gallup (of the Gallup Poll) and children’s book author, Mrs Adelaide Cummings. It is not unusual to see three genera- tions of a family stand together and pres- ent awards in memory of their loved ones. This is the case of the Mrs. Trudy Albury Citizenship Award and Mr. Reggie Malo- ne All Around Top Senior Student Award. Even more exciting is when a member of that family wins that particular award, as in the case of Ben Patterson winning the Reggie Malone Award this year. At the end of the Awards Ceremony the Principal thanks the many community vol- unteers who make our school so special, and the PTA officers present the teach- ers with a present for the year’s dedicated work. Projects and trophies are on display for parent’s viewing and then it’s all over for that school year and out for summer fun! Mr. Sweeting thanked previ- ous Councils for their work at maintaining the island and noted that each succeeding group of Councillors builds on the work left by previous Councillors. He was particular proud that nearly all burning at the dump had been eliminated. Four containers of garbage were now re- moved every two weeks by barge. The four are replaced by empty containers to begin the cycle again. The containers are emptied at the Marsh Harbour public dump. Other work of the Council included repairing the harbour entrance light, cleaning the cem- etery and installing a plaque there, and ini- tiating the Man-O-War Wall of Heroes. Councillor Joe Albury was thanked for single-handedly renovating the library building. Budget figures were given showing that over half of the District’s $344,576 annual budget was spent on garbage collection and removal. He was dismayed that the single island of Green Turtle Cay received an $85,000 increase while the of Hope Town District received an increase $8,076 to be shared between the District’s three towns. One of the larger issues of residents con- cerned the two-week interval for removing the open containers of garbage. The island is being over-run with house flies, appar- ently to a greater extent than before, and the open garbage containers are thought to be at fault. The empty containers come back without being washed and arrive full of flies to repeat the cycle. Various options at increasing the re- moval frequency were discussed. It was pointed out that the Ministry of Environ- mental Health pays to have the Hope Town garbage removed by barge twice a week whereas Man-O-War must finance its own garbage removal. Smaller bins were sug- gested which the local freight boats could handle. No conclusion was reached, but Mr. Sweeting promised to look into the Please see Cays Page 5 Veteran retired Hope Town School principal, Mrs. Suzanne Bethel, listens as teacher, Mr. Justin Higgs, explains why James won the Academic Award.
