August 1, 2007 The Abaconian Page 25A Police Held Summer Youth Program By Jennifer Hudson Officers of the Abaco Branch of the Roy- al Bahamas Police Force held their summer youth programme Working Towards a Bet- ter Community for the third year running during the month of July. The programme went from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day be- tween July 2 and 27 and was held at the Central Abaco Primary School. It was open to youngsters between the ages of 7 and 15 years. Each year the camp is very popu- lar and 60 children attended the first week. The organizers expected more for the sec- ond and third weeks as several other activi- ties which were also running during week one kept the numbers a little lower. It was originally planned that separate camps be held in North, Central and South Abaco but once the camps began it was de- cided to combine all three camps into one single central camp. So the children from Cooper’s Town and Sandy Point were bused into Marsh Harbour each day. “We decided to bring the children together so that they could have more interaction with all the kids,” stated Cpl. Campbell. A rep- resentative from the Police Force in each of the three areas helped to run the camp: Woman Sgt. Johnson from the North, Cpl. Higgs from the South and Cpl. Miller from Central Abaco with Cpl. Campbell as Overseer. While there were some more formal class- es such as Bahamian history, art instruction and lectures from the Police Department, Bahamas Electricity Corporation, Bahamas Telecommunications Corporation, the fire department and district clinics, there were also some fascinating and fun demonstra- tions. One day the children enjoyed the excitement of having rides around the fore- court on the motorcycles of three officers The children attending the police summer program enjoyed going for rides on the police motor cycles. The police emphasized active activities at the camp so it would appeal to the children and not be like another school. of the Police Mororcycle Squad, clinging tightly around the officers’ waists. The organizers planned to keep the class- room activities to a minimum this year as, according to Cpl. Campbell, “we realized that the children spend the whole school year sitting in desks. They are tired of the classroom and need to get out and play and have fun during the summer. Therefore, we have put a lot of emphasis on fun and games and field trips this year.” Field trips were taken to Treasure Cay Beach, Bahama Palm Shores and Spanish Cay. Each child paid $20 for the entire summer programme which included lunch every day and a camp T-shirt. “We hope this year will be a great suc- cess so that we will have an even bigger crowd next year,” stated Cpl. Campbell. Crafts and other creative fun projects were planned for the children attending the police summer program in Marsh Harbour.
