Page2A The Abaconian August 1 , 2007 Power boats replace workboat regatta Festival From Page 1 I was the last person to take off. I didn’t waste any time catching up and taking the lead. You had some good boats in the com- petition, and they all run between 85-90 miles per hour. I knew I had some good competition. “But you can’t touch that (Gunslinger). The association got together and decided to come over and support this. I think they are doing a great job because they put a lot of time and effort into this. It may not look like it, but it is a lot of hard work and stress,” he added. Mr. Dames said when he passed the crowd at the ferry dock, he was running about 102 miles per hour each time and on the back stretch he brakes it down. Mr. Dames races his Scarab with twin 900 horse power inboards. Finishing second in the inboard class was Monkey Business and Dirty Bastard finished third. The outboard class was definitely a lot closer as Go Fast Adventures was able to just edge out Colombo at the end to win the class and knock off last year’s win- ner. Despite trailing for the entire race, Go Fast, a 30-foot Scarab with twin 200 horse power Yamahas, found a way to fight back on the last lap to win its first power boat race. With heavy rain on the north side of the race course close to Green Turtle Cay, Go Fast was able to take advantage of the inclement weather because the boat had a windshield while the other boats in their class didn’t. Kyle Smith, Go Fast captain, said, “Co- lombo ran an excellent race, and they are faster than I am. But the weather worked in my favor. I was able to get behind my T rhe winning inboard Scarab, Guuslineer traveled at 102 miles per hour each time it passed the viewing stand on shore at the Treasure Cay ferry landing. The crowds cheered him on as he passed. Abaco Sh BAHAMAS ADDRESS P.O. I wasn’t, so I had full throttle all the way down. I say the rain hurt those who didn’t have the windshield quite a bit. The visibil- ity was nil at one point and I had to make sure we didn’t run up on anyone else. I am very happy and pleased. Everyone talks about the Go Fast boat being the slowest in the fleet so this is a big achievement for Go Fast Adventures,” he added. Johnny Garvey was captaining Colom- bo, and he seemed to slow down just be- fore they reached the finish line thinking the race was called from the previous lap because of the rain. However, the final lap was the one they were currently racing and it allowed Go Fast to slip by Colombo. Colombo, a 30-foot Scarab with twin 250 horsepower Yamahas, led the entire race until the last couple hundred feet. Fin- ishing third in the outboard class was Rock- et. The top three finishers in both classes were from Grand Bahama. Mr. Garvey said the first event went A Joint Venture of Marsh Harbour Shipping Co. & United Abaco Shipping Co. really well last year and the Abaco people came out and showed great support so they wanted to come back and help it grow and to have a good time. He said, “We had a bad rain storm towards Green Turtle Cay area and that actually gave Kyle in the an advantage over us because they have a pro- tective windshield. It was a good race until the rain stopped it. As for Kyle, if it rains like that for every race he will be in good shape. I wasn’t disappointed because it is all about being a good sportsman and com- ing out here participating and having fun. That is nature and we can’t do anything about that,” he added. This was the second straight success- ful power boat race for the North Abaco committee and chairman of the committee, Cliff Bootle, said it is only going to get better in the coming years. The support of the Grand Bahama Powerboat Association definitely helps as the majority of the boats are from Grand Bahama, and they lend credibility to the Please see Festival Page 18 EXPANDED Stier NEW US.
