More boats, more people and more enthusiasiam characterized the festival. Immigration cracks down on illegal immigrants By Samantha V. Evans Abaco Immigration Department, under the leadership of Supt. Spence Dorsett, has initiated a number of projects to execute the policies of the department. Recently, they started to stage sustained pick-ups and patrols (as much as possible) at bus stops and boat stops to let the new illegal immigrants know that immigration is still here on the island. Mr. Dorsett stated that there are a lot of new immigrants on the island, many of whom have already joined the workforce. Even though the work load they have is its equipment into the park area. By Julian Lockhart Ozzie Dames came to put on a show, and he definitely impressed the crowd as he dominated the 2nd Annual North Abaco Summer Festival and Power Boat Associa- tion Race in his 36-foot Scarab on July 21. Mr. Dames was just one of the representa- tives from the Grand Bahama Powerboat Association who made the trip over to Treasure Cay to participate in the power boat race as he competed in the inboard class. Racing Gunslinger, Mr. Dames proved to be too much for the rest of the fleet. Despite starting after everyone else, Mr. Dames was still able to lap everyone, and the fans knew whom they came to see as they cheered him on with each lap. Mr. Dames exclaimed, “It feels great to come over here and dominate. I did expect to dominate and just take a look (he pointed to his two chrome engines) and you can see why. Funding from the business community and government has gradually improved the park. This year alone Marsh Harbour has invested more than $30,000 in improvements to the park. These included a $20,000 donation by Baker’s Bay for a roof for the stage, Hardyboard siding for the 10 stalls, and a donation by J & J Electric for globe lighting for each hut. Gottlieb is Chairman of BEC By Mirella Santillo On July 2nd Mr. Frederik Gottlieb was appointed Chairman of the Bahamas Elec- tricity Corporation by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham. The ap- pointment came at a time when the profit- ability of the corporation, which had been historically profitable, has been under- mined for a number of different factors. Asked what were his goals and chal- lenges as new Chairman of BEC, Mr. Got- tlieb stated that his goal was to continue to fulfill the corporation’s mission which is to provide safe, reliable and cost effective supply of electricity while generating suffi- cient income to recover all costs including debt service and to augment reserve funds and self-finance a significant number of the corporation’s capital projects.
