Governor made vigorous prepa- row

Dutch fleet, however, failed to]l-
put in an appearance, and the
serene period of Governor Nic-
colls’ rule continued until 1668,
when at his own request he was
recalled to England. His suc-
cessor was Colonel Francis Love-
lace, who held the office until
1673, when the truce between the
two countries again suffered dis-
rupture, the city reverting finally |
to the Dutch.
