DOWNSTREAM RESEARCH That part of FARMIt- SYSTEMS RESEARCH concerned with assessing the FARM SYSTEM role of information gained from UPSTREAM RESEARCH. It may be carried out on farmers' field' or on research stations as field, la:boatory or desk studies. DRY FARMINGi Cultiv.ati-n of crops (usually cereal?) in ROTATION with one or two years of F;-LLOW and without irrigation in arid and semi-arid zones. DRYLAND Land that. except for limited periods, does not hold moisture in the rooting zone in excess of that held at field capacity. ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Factors oF -an economic nature (such -s the availability of credit, prices of farm products, cost of hired labour, cost of seed, agricultural. chemicals and farm equipment, and land ownership and tenure ch-aracteristics) which contribute to the ENVIRONMENT within which a FARMING SYSTEM operates. ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY This is said to prevail if an activity or investment has expected benefits in excess of costs when the time value of money is considered. ENVIRONMENT The setting within which a SYSTEM operates and from which it is delimited z,: the boundary of the system. Relative to a farm or FARMING SVSTEM, the environment is constituted by the physical, biological, economic and sociocultural setting within which the farm or far,'ing system operates. PAGE 7
