That city is called the City of the Apes; and when the night cometh, the people who reside in it go forth from the doors that open upon the sea, and, embarking in boats and ships, pass the night upon the sea, in their fear of the apes, lest they should come down upon them in the night from the mountains. So I repented of my having landed there, remember- ing my companions, and what had befallen them from the apes, first and afterwards; and I sat weeping and mourning. And thereupon a man of the inhabitants of the city advanced to me and said to me, ‘“‘O my master, it seemeth that thou art a stranger in this country.” I therefore replied, “‘ Yes: I am a stranger, and a poor man.
