But he had not forgotten the North Pole.
After breakfast he went into the library, and
found several books about Polar expeditions ;
and, being intelligent, he learned two things
—first, that one must go to the Pole in a
ship ; and, second, that it is very difficult to
reach because of its being dreadfully cold
there, and of there being nothing to eat.

So the first thing was to obtain a ship.

Now Tommy had just bought himself a
Noah’s ark. He went and looked at that,
and sorrowfully decided that it was too small
for him to travel in; but as he looked at it
it suddenly occurred to him that it was made
out of a piece of a tree.

“Trees grow,” thought Tommy, ‘and so,
of course, a part of a tree will grow, for the
