AFTER that conversation Tommy thought a
good deal about the North Pole, and decided
that he should like to get there and see it
and surprise all the other boys at the school
with his discovery when he returned after
the holidays ; and he grew so interested that
he asked his father to give him the compass,
and got it.

Next morning he decided to have a try to
find the North Pole with the aid of his com-
pass; so he started early from the garden
gate and walked on in the direction pointed
out by the blue end of the needle; but when
he had gone across three fields and along a
road, he was stopped by a brick wall which
stretched away east and west, and blocked
his passage.
