‘Where had I heard the name of Menu

- before? What were the words I had read

in the newspaper years ago? “The Menu
Puddles,” was it? ‘The Menu Muddles!”

Then it came back to me. Menu, the
celebrated experimental cook, who had been
driven from London because of the effect of
his awful experiments on the digestions of
the customers at his restaurant! He had
had to leave England.

What could it mean? A locked crater
on a lonely island, a notorious experimental
chef, and this fearful perfume of cookery !
