The United States includes the middle part
of North America and all Alaska.’

The north shore of the gulf of Mexico is
at one third of the distance from the equator
to the north pole. The line which is just
halfway between the equator and this pole
passes through the Great Lakes. The southern
part of the United States is in the warm belt.
The northern part is mainly in thé cool belt.

in many places rocky and broken, and there are
many fine harbors. There are
but few good harbors on the
Pacific coast of the United States.
