Till one by one, in single file,

They crossed the stream in Brownie style.

Sometimes a city stretched before,

With all its bustle,

jam and roar;

Its busy mills,

Its blazing squares and darksome lanes;

Then Brownies needs must circle round
And dodge about for safer ground.

To thriving towns they hurried all,
And visited each church and hall,

And passed opinions freely still

On what they saw, as Brownies will;
Then London, Galt, and Kingston old,

In turn received the Brownies bold.
