A Perfect Gentleman. 101 Unless the man has Christ in his heart, he can not be sure of the victory; and only those can be truly called perfect gentlemen who, taking Christ (the only perfect Man) for their pattern, become like Him, ever asking themselves, What would Christ have me to do? and then, “Whether the road be rough and dreary, And the end far out of sight, Foot it bravely, strong or weary, Trust in Him, and do the right.” We have a psalm, the 15th, which has aptly been called the ‘‘Gentleman’s” psalm, and it does indeed seem a directory for the daily life of one. “Tord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in Thy Holy Hill? “He that walketh uprightly, and worketh right- eousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. “He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. “In whose eyes a vile person is contemned ; but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not, “He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.”
