For many of the foréign cradle-songs we are in- debted to the kind researches of friends. Great pains have been taken to make the illustra- tions as appropriate in charaéter, and as true to local colour, as possible. The musical side of the songs it has not been sought to present; partly because examples of this have already been brought before the public, and partly because many of these lullabies are sung to primitive and monotonous chants, so that the words would often seem more worthy of notice than the music.
