The first thing which occurred to him when he had risen and dressed himself, was the particular order given to him not to start before breakfast. I doubt whether he would have done this at any time or under any circumstances, but the order which he had received made him feel that he certainly must not do so on this particular occasion, and accordingly he went downstairs deter- mined to ask his host whether he could provide him with a morning, as he had done with an evening meal. It was not necessary to ask, however, for at the door of the room in which he had supped the night before, stood the worthy old man, grinning with a friendly grin, and pointing to the table, on which was a most tempting dish of poached eggs, with tea and toast by its side.
