He was named Outstand- ing Motivator in 1997 by the Westinghouse Talent Search, the Dade County Science Teacher of the Year in 2001 and the Radio Shack 2002 National Sci- ence Teacher of the Year. In 2007, Mr. Horgan was selected as Palm Beach County's Science Teacher of the Year. Mr. Horgan has been married 21 years to wife Jennifer, a local second- grade teacher at Frontier Elementary School in Loxa- hatchee, and they have one son, Stephen, 15, who attends Suncoast Commu- nity High School in Riviera Beach. "He offers a Michael L. world of Horgan experience to his stu- dents and keeps them motivated with meaningful land enjoyable assign- ments." A typical hands-on assignment in his biology class would be to ask his students to identify an ani- mal by looking at the skulls of eight different animals. Students would have to look at several variables, including skull dents and teeth patterns, in order to identify the animal, he said. It is a puzzle for the chil- dren, and one they enjoy, he said. When the "switch goes off," he added, it satis- fies his teaching experi- ence. "That happens a lot and everybody learns from the "Michael is an inspiration to both his students and also his peers." He said he and his wife's careers are "a great lifestyle, and you get a lot done," and added that he also coaches swimming in his spare time and loves fish- ing. "I was born with cystic fibrosis, so we couldn't have many kids, and I wish I had a bigger family," Mr. Horgan said. "But when you coach kids, they become part of your extended family, and they are with you for three to four years, from about age 7 or 8, to between 10 and 12 years." He tries to raise aware- ness about cystic fibrosis by being a role model for transplant patients and mentoring them. "I had a double lung transplant at Miami Jack- son in 2000," Mr. Horgan said. "Everybody scratches each other's backs." Cystic fibrosis is an inherited, progressive degenerative disease, which mainly affects organs, such as the lungs, he said. "Michael is always will- ing to go that extra mile to help a fellow educator," Mr. Gent said. "Mike Horgan is everything and more one would want in a teacher of the year." This year, Mr. Horgan was selected to represent Dwyer in both the school and county Teacher of the Year Program. As county Teacher of the Year, Mr. Horgan will be invited to participate in a state department of educa- tion roundtable discussion, as well as attend an awards ceremony sponsored by Macy's department store. The roundtable and awards ceremonies will take place in July, with the date yet to be determined, Mr. Horgan said. "As Palm Beach County's Teacher of the Year, Michael will be presented $750 by Macy's, and his school will receive $250," according to the release. "I enjoy teaching," Mr. Horgan said. "It reaffirms in what you believe: having hands-on lessons and get- ting good feedback from parents and getting recog- nition." He said he does not think he will ever retire com- pletely. "When I retire from teaching, I'll go into coach- ing some kind of swimming lessons," Mr. Horgan said. "I won't ever retire, and it's not in my family to retire. My mom is still coaching at 82. I don't think it's some- thing I would enjoy." He said all his accom- plishments would not have been possible without the support of his family, school staff, students and the principal. "Any kind of work I do is only because of family," Mr. Horgan said. "They defi- nitely help me and support me, especially the coaching deal, with all the traveling involved. "I don't dread waking up in the morning," he said. "It's a fun job and you have summer vacations. You get to do all your traveling, fishing and everything else during that time."
