APPENDIX RECIPES AND HELPFUL HINTS FOR THE TEACHER FINGER PAINT 2 box of corn starch or laundry starch (1i2 cups) 1 quart of boiling water 1 cups of soap flakes y cup of talcum powder M teaspoon poster paint of each color desired Food coloring is equally satisfactory, cheaper, and easier to wash off hands. Method of mixing: Mix starch with cold water to make into creamy paste. Add boil- ing water and cook until mixture becomes transparent or glassy look- ing. Stir constantly, add talcum. Let mixture cool somewhat and add soap flakes, stirring until they are evenly dissolved. Pour mixture into jars. To each jar add Y2 teaspoonful of color desired. The paint should be thick. Stir throughly. One teaspoonful each of alum and of oil of cloves may be added to the above to prevent fermenting. Cover tightly. FIXATIVE 1. Glue thinned with water to the consistency of milk makes an excellent fixative for chalk work. 2. One part shellac Two parts denatured alcohol This is for chalk drawing. 3. For pastello or charcoal Gum arabic, thin with water until consistency of thin mucilage. Spray on, repeat twice. May also paint on back of charcoal. HOW TO PREPARE PAPER MACHE Use old newspapers. The soft parts are better than the slick. Tear the paper up in little pieces leaving the edges ragged, and put in a pan. Pour hot or boiling water over the bits of paper and soak over- night. It may be cooked a while if desired. The idea is to disintegrate the paper as much as possible so that a mushy pulp results. When ready to use squeeze the water out with the hands and work some paste into it. Use enough paste to hold the pulp together so that it can be modeled like clay.
