HOBBY HORSE Materials needed: broom stick stovepipe wire paint paint brush newspaper strips y to y inch wide tacks rope or yarn, felt, wire, raffia, etc. Tack wires to broom stick. Shape wires to form head. * Cover form with strips of paper. Form may be stuffed with news- paper padding which may also be tied around to form the neck. Con- tinue covering with paper strips. Use paste generously. Add crumpled paper to fill out hollows and to bring out such features as jaw bone, nostrils, eyes, etc. Shape of head and features may be partially modeled from basic form if enough paste is used to keep form moist and pliable. Twelve to fourteen or more layers of newspaper strips may be needed. The shape should be solid when dry. Cut or tear ears using several layers of paper. Roll ear at base and paste on head. Cover with strips. Final entire coat may be toweling. Let dry. Paint with tempera or enamel. Double strands of raveled rope may be used for a mane. Bind in middle or near base, flatten, and glue to neck. Buttons may be used for eyes. A harness may be made if desired, from leather, rope, felt, etc.
