About the Book and Authors The authors have synthesized and elaborated on the work of a team of agricultural and social scientists ex- pert in farming systems research and extension (FSR/E). Their handbook presents the role and philosophy of on-farm research in FSR/E activities, describes a logical sequence for technology development, and explains the most-used statistical procedures in easy-to-follow steps. It also outlines new ideas and methods for analyzing agronomic data obtained outside of the controlled condi- tions typically found on experiment stations. Peter E. Hildebrand is professor in the Food and Resource Economics Department at the University of Florida. Previously, he was with the Rockefeller Founda- tion and on the faculties of the University of Nebraska, Colorado State University, and Texas A & M University. He has been involved in development projects in Pakistan, Colombia, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
