FErmUARY 1, 1862.] 1 -u -i THE BOTCHERBY CORRESPONDENCE. To THOMAS PURTLEBOYS, Esq., Bigglcsicade. 2 Y DEAR SIR, A -- I write at once to allay any feeling of anxiety, which may A-wh io lI mustbefelt at Biggles- Swade, when that distin- guishedbo- rough finds that its re- presenta- tive neither -m--oved nor seconded the address to the Throne. Let that enlightened constituency be comforted by the fact that the style and construction of the Queen's Speech were such as might have flowed from the pen of a Botcherby, or adorned the columns of a Biggleswado Blue Banncr. Indeed, I cannot help thinking that my speech on the hustings on my election having on so recent an occasion appeared in the provincial press, must have met the eye of the Noble Lord at the head of the Government; and that he, with his accustomed Gothic taste and acuteness, adopted it as his model. As the Blue Banner said at the time, That speech was marked by terse brevity, lucid clearness, coupled with all eschewing avoidance of all exaggerated hyperbole, iterated repetition, or superfluous redundance." On Tuesday, the 11th, matters began to look brisker, and some skirmishing took place. MR. MONCKTON MILNES moved for leave to bring in a bill legalizing certain marriages of affinity. Had I been prepared with a speech, it would have been a fine opportunity for smy debtlt. Unfortunately, no ideas presented themselves to my mind, so I was compelled to be silent, and to quote from the hon. member's speech on a former introduction of the same bill, "the beating of my own heart was all the sound I heard." However, I hope in time my nervousness will wear off. Of course, I quite agreed with MIR. WALPOLE when he said that he was glad the alteration of the law of marriage would comprehend the whole United Kingdom, but hoped the House would not sanction the change at all. It struck me that this state- ment, and the mode in which it was expressed, was clear and con- sistent, although some people might think that if you opposed a bill as bad in principle, the fewer countries it was extended to (if passed against your wishes) the better you would be pleased. But thensome people are not representatives of the University of Cambridge. On the same day MR. WliTE and MR. WILLIAMS were very anxious to have one day a week set aside for the consideration of the estimates, but as such a thing never has been done, of course it is wrong. It might be an improvement, I confess, and so SItl GEORGE GREY and SIR CORNEWELL LEWIS seemed to think; but still, as a true Conserva- tive, I object to all improvements, until they become inevitably neces- sary. I think AMR. WALPOLE gave the proposal its death-blow, how- ever, when he reminded the House the alteration would interfere with the members' dinners. Of course it is a duty every M.P. owes his constituents to take care of himself, and not risk their interests by incurring tho danger of illness or even inconvenience-which might disturb his mind. The motion was ultimately withdrawn out of respect to the old maxim of Parliamentary practice, "Grievance before Supply." It is curious to observe how natural this course is- for I find myself always grumbling before I give MRs. B. the cheque for the housekeeping, or my daughters their shopping money. I must now hasten to the House.--I am, sir, etc., Eaton Square. Bonus BOTCHERBY. To Mas. ZENOBIA- PARKLETON, Housekeeper, Botcherby Hall, Biggleswade. DEAR MRS. B.-Xqqus delay as I wanted for nuse.
