Occupations included market seller, certi- fied school teacher, bus driver, farmer, student (ele- mentary, secondary, normal school, or university), taxi driver, housewife, university professor, administrator of community development programs, and Baptist minister. All sources 40 and under were bilingual in the sense of being able to carry on an intelligible conversation in Spanish, although in some cases their phonology was heavily Aymara (see 1-1.3). Below iS a chart showing sex, age, and (for sources over 40) knowledge of Spanish, the latter determination based usually on a speaker's self-evaluation. Ages shown are approximate as age was not obtained for all sources.
