Sources of The Illuminations:
Photographic facsimile of pages from the manuscript of The Four Zoas, based on photographs (some
infrared) provided by the Manuscript Room and Photograph Services of the British Library (to us through
David V. Erdman), follow the numbering system still used by Erdman in The Complete Poetry and Prose of
William Blake (1982) -and used throughout the text of this book; however, we note that Erdman has given a
new ordering of pages (received as this book goes to press) in: Cettina Tramontano Magno and David V.
Erdman, The Four Zoas by William Blake: A Photographic Facsimile of the Manuscript with Commentary on the
Illuminations (Lewisburg: Bucknell University Press, 1987), and only in the following list can we give
variations, in brackets. The pages from Edward Young's Night Thoughts, used to open sections (Regions) of
this book and printed back to back with corresponding pages from The Four Zoas (for easy comparison), are
taken from: Roger R. Easson and Robert N. Essick, William Blake: Book Illustrator: A Bibliography and
Catalogue of the Commercial Engravings, Vol. I (Normal, Ill.: The American Blake Foundation, 1972), from
Prof. Essick's copy of the plates.
