GRADUATE COURSES Graduate students desiring to take work leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy must have completed an undergraduate major in History of not less than 24 hours or 36 hours in the social sciences, 18 of which were in History. For the M. A. degree, a minimum of 24 hours of course work is required, 12 to 18 hours of which must be in history and 6 to 12 hours in a separate but related discipline. An acceptable thesis must be presented and a proficiency in reading one foreign lan- guage be demonstrated. No credit earned in HY. 500 may be counted in fulfillment of the 24 hour requirement for the M. A. degree. A mastery of one field of history, at least one course in a field of History related to the area of primary concentration, and HY. 503 are minimum requirements for the degree. For the Ph.D. degree, the primary area of History must be United States History or Latin-American History and the dissertation must be in one of these fields. A mas- tery of five of the following fields of History is required for the doctorate: (1) United States to 1815, (2) United States since 1815, (3) Colonial Latin America, (4) Re- publican Latin America, (5) Ancient, (6) Medieval, (7) Modern Europe, (8) English, (9) Asiatic. A reading knowledge of French and German is required, unless the student's graduate supervisory committee recommends the substitution of another lan- guage for either French or German. A minor must be offered in a field other than history, and although a minimum of 12 hours will be necessary, the graduate com- mittee of advisers will determine the requirement for the minor. HY. 500.-Thesis. Variable credit, maximum 6 hours. Credits earned for HY. 500 cannot be used to meet any of the 24 hours required for the degree of Master of Arts.
