A survey of Latin America from the Wars of Independence to the present, with particular attention to the fundamental political, economic, and cultural factors and to the increasing importance of Latin America in world affairs. COURSES FOR ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATES AND GRADUATES The courses numbered 400 through 492 are primarily for advanced undergrad- uates; but they may be taken for graduate major credit with the approval of the student's graduate supervisory committee. Additional work in these courses, especially on bibliography and historiography, will be required of graduate students. Humanism, the main schools of Renaissance art, the growth of the dynastic state, the culture of the middle class, and the expansion of Europe will be emphasized.
