An introduction to important examples of painting, sculpture, architecture and related arts from WOO B. C. to contemporary art movements. No previous knowledge of art will be expeed of the student. An investigation of color, line, and design, and their relationship to pictorial com- position. Problems will be based upon organization of the picture plane and will be developed through the various phases of watercolor techniques as media for visual expression. ART 302.-Design II. 6 hours of lecture-laboratory. 3 credits. Prerequi- site: ART. 301. Offered 1, 2, 3. A continuation of ART 301. Techniques and media other than watercolor. Ad- vanced problems in pictorial organization will be executed in oil paint, encaustic, and egg tempera. The course introduces the student to a range of painting media while he continues his exploration of the potentialities of design. ART 311.-Freehand Drawing. 6 hours of lecture-laboratory. 3 credits. Prerequisite: ART 224. Offered 1, 2, 3. Studies from the model with the emphasis on the relationship of the structure of the human figure to its movement. ART 312.-Freehand Drawing. 6 hours of lecture-laboratory. 3 credits. Prerequisite: ART 311. Offered 1, 2, 3. A continuation of ART 311 with emphasis on the structure of the head and figure. ART 322.-Sculpture. 6 hours of lecture-laboratory. 3 credits. Prerequi- site: ART 122. Offered 1, 2. For beginners and advanced students. Modelling in clay, plaster casting, and carving in stone or wood. Relief and free standing figure groups. ART 330.-Patternmaking. 6 hours of lecture-laboratory. 3 credits. Of- fered 1. Fundamental principles of flat pattern designing by use of basic foundation patterns in various scale measurements. Emphasis is placed on development of student's ability to adapt the basic foundation pattern in constructing accurate and complete patterns for current fashions. ART 333.-Costume Construction I. 12 hours of lecture-laboratory. 6 credits. Offered 1. A study of basic principles of clothing selection and construction. Various gar- ments are constructed to develop skill in the use of the sewing machine, commercial patterns, pattern alterations, and finishing techniques.
