Graduate work leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees is offered in the following fields of anthropology: social and cultural anthropology, archeology, physical anthropology, and linguistics. Particular strengths of the department are the areas of Latin American and urban anthropology, problems of applied research and action, and the archeology of the southeastern United States. The Bachelor of Arts degree with major in anthropology is not required for admission to graduate work in the department, but students without such preparation should expect to make up any deficiencies in background in- formation. The normal distribution of work for the Master of Arts includes: (1) APY 600-Methods and Materials for Research; (2) at least two area courses (North American, South American, African, etc.); (3) at least one theory course each in social/cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, archeology, and linguistics; (4) a written comprehensive examination in all four sub- fields of anthropology; and (5) sufficient credits in APY 699 to prepare the required thesis. The Master of Arts requirements, including the thesis, should be completed in 5 or 6 quarters. Students are admitted to a doctoral program upon faculty recommenda- tion after completing the Master of Arts comprehensive examinations. New intermediate-level students (more than one year's graduate work) coming from other universities will be evaluated and recommended for doctoral work by a faculty committee at the beginning of their second quarter of residence. The minimum course requirement for the doctorate is 90 graduate quarter hours beyond the B.A. This program includes the distribution of work required for the master's program. In addition, a doctoral student must work closely with a supervisory committee, which advises him on the choice of three fields of specialization, around which further course work, reading, qualifying examinations, and doctoral research are arranged. After satisfying the language requirement, the student must pass a written and oral qualifying examination administered by his committee. Ordinarily at least a year of doctoral research and fieldwork is required.
