In some instances, departments may admit students with the understanding that further experience may be required before the student will be recommended for the degree. Admission to the Advanced School will be based on the following criteria: 1. High scholastic average for previous graduate work (3.5 grade-point average or above, as computed at the University of Florida, will be considered evidence of good scholarship). 2. Satisfactory scores on the Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Ex- amination. 3. A personal interview or examination administered by the department or division in which the student seeks to specialize. The judgment concerning admission of an individual student will be made according to the above criteria by the department in which he desires to specialize. The department will certify to the admissions committee that the student has met the criteria for admission to the Advanced School. In all cases the record, experience, and personal qualifications of the person applying for admission are subject to the approval of the admissions committee. All persons admitted to the Advanced School of Education must also apply for and be admitted to the Graduate School of the University. SPECIALIST IN EDUCATION Primary emphasis in an Ed.S. program is placed on the development of the competencies needed for a specific job. Programs are available in the various areas of concentration within the Departments of Administration and Supervision, Foundations of Education, and Counselor Education, the di- vision of Curriculum and Instruction, and Special Education. The Florida State Department of Education recognizes this degree for purposes of granting Rank 1A certification. To study for this degree, the student must apply for and be admitted to the Advanced School of the College of Education. The student must also apply for and be admitted to candidacy for the degree no later than the term prior to that in which he intends to graduate. All work for the degree must be completed within seven years of admission to the Advanced School of the College of Education. The Ed.S. degree is awarded at the completion of a planned program with a minimum of 100 credits beyond the bachelor's degree. All credits accepted for the program must contribute to the unity and the stated objective of the total program. Students will be examined by a committee selected by the department chairman to assure that this objective has been achieved. A thesis is not required; however, each program will include continuing at- tention to a research component relevant to the professional role for which the student is preparing.
