College of Nursing The College of Nursing offers undergradu- ate and graduate degree programs in nursing. The undergraduate degree is the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the graduate degrees are the Master of Science in Nursing and the Doctor of Philosophy in nursing science. The establishment of the College of Nursing in the Health Science Center offers a unique opportunity to learn and work with students from other health professions. Shands Hospital at the University of Florida houses outpatient clinics, a psychiatric unit and hospital units for seriously ill patients. The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and other com- munity facilities, such as public health agencies, community hospitals and outreach clinics, also are used to prepare students for professional nursing positions. The nursing degree prepares graduates to enter professional positions in primary, sec- ondary and tertiary care settings with clients of all ages from diverse populations, or advance- ment to a graduate degree program in nursing. The program of the College of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing and is approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing. The college is a member of the Council of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs of the National League for Nursing, the Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing of the Southern Regional Education Board and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Student Nursing Associations Sigma Theta Tau, Inc. Sigma Theta Tau International, Inc., is the honor society of nursing. The Alpha Theta Chapter at the University of Florida was estab- lished in 1964. The purposes are to recognize the development of leadership qualities, to foster high professional standards, to encourage cre- ative work and to strengthen commitment to the profession of nursing. Students are chosen for this organization on the basis of scholastic aver- age and leadership ability. College of Nursing Student Council The Nursing Student Council works cooper- atively with the faculty and students to promote unity within the student body and to provide communication among faculty and students. Council representatives are elected annually from each class. Florida Nursing Students Association The Florida Nursing Students Association (FNSA) is a preprofessional organization designed to prepare the nursing student for par- ticipation in the professional organization, the American Nurses' Association. Nursing Alumni Association The Nursing Alumni Association of the col- lege is composed of faculty and graduates of the programs offered by the college. The objec- tives of this organization are to stimulate mutual help and improvement in nursing; to promote collegiality among the graduates of the college; to advance the interests of the col- lege and the university; and to promote the professional and educational advancement of nursing in cooperation with local, state and national organizations. Admission All students who are majoring in nursing are urged to contact the Office of Admissions and Records of the College of Nursing for advise- ment. Minimum Requirements to Begin Professional Study Completion of 60 semester hours of required general education and preprofes- sional course work. Completion of two sequential courses of foreign language in secondary school or 8-10 semester hours at the postsecondary level, or document an equivalent level of proficiency. An overall GPA of at least 2.8. A GPA of at least 2.8 in required prepro- fessional courses. A grade of C or better in all required pre- professional courses. Completion of all sections on the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST). Certification in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Satisfactory completion of communication and computation requirement (Gordon Rule). Compliance with health policy require- ments including immunizations. Health and hospital insurance Completion of all university admission requirements. Native UF Students Freshmen are admitted initially to the College of Nursing to complete general educa- tion and preprofessional requirements as listed under baccalaureate curriculum. Standards for continuation are established for those students who have declared a nursing major and who will be monitored by the College of Nursing. Students will receive a universal tracking audit at the end of each semester to determine their status towards their anticipated degree. Continuation standards are outlined in the cur- riculum plan for the baccalaureate degree. Application Students begin professional nursing studies annually each fall semester. Applications must be received by February 15 to be considered for admission to the fall semester. All academic requirements must be completed by the end of the spring semester prior to fall enrollment. Transfer Students Florida community college transfer students must complete an Associate of Arts degree. Students attending four year colleges and out of state institutions who will have completed 60 semester hours should take courses similar to the preparatory courses outlined in the first two years of the curriculum plan. All other require- ments must also be met. Upon receipt of transcripts and the informa- tion form required by the College of Nursing, applicants are screened individually. Factors that may be given consideration include acade- mic record, cumulative grade point average, performance in the preprofessional courses, extent to which applicant exceeds minimum requirements, personal background, relevant achievement, experiences and career goals. The most eligible candidates are recom- mended to the dean. Florida residents are given priority. College Regulations Health Policy The College of Nursing requires specified immunization and health screening tests period- ically. Compliance with health policies is required for clinical placement. Uniforms All nursing students are required to have a name pin, white uniform, College of Nursing emblem for uniform, white nursing shoes, ban- dage scissors, a watch with a second hand, a stethoscope, pen light and hemostat. Detailed equipment and uniform information is sent prior to beginning nursing courses. Expenditures Expenditures specific to nursing studies courses include the items listed under uniforms, laboratory fees for clinical courses and trans- portation for off-campus experiences. Pregrad- uation achievement exams are required and are paid for by the student. Universal Tracking Standards Universal tracking is the tool used by the university to advise students on progress toward
