Computer and Information Sciences Read the earlier sections describing general education and CLAS requirements. Refer espe- cially to the Majors and Minors in the College section for program variations and other clari- fying information. At the time this catalog went to press, sev- eral changes were pending in the universal tracking plans for majors and for course level (1000, 2000, etc.) for certain courses in the State University System. Students should consult the relevant department or 100 AAC for up-to-date course information. GENERAL INFORMATION: The Depart- ment of Computer and Information Science and Engineering was created to serve the needs of the entire university. Toward this end several service courses are available as well as several degree programs. Bachelor degree programs and/or a minor are currently available through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Warrington College of Business Administration and the College of Engineering. For a descrip- tion of the minor, refer to the CISE section in the College of Engineering. Master's degree pro- grams and a Ph.D. program are also available. THE CISE MAJOR IN CLAS: A minimum of 120 semester hours and a junior/senior level GPA of 2.0 is required for a bachelor's degree with a major in CISE from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In order to be continue to the junior/senior level in this major, a student should complete his or her general education requirements and complete at least MAC 2311, MAC 2312 and MAC 2313 with a "C+" or better grade. Students must also take two courses in computer science as a part of their general education. Fulfilling the minimum requirements, however, does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Department requirements are as follows: Mathematics requirements MAC 2311, MAC 2312, MAC 2313, MAS 3114, STA 4033. Physics requirement PHY 2055L, and either PHY 3048, or PHY 2053; PHY 2056L and either PHY 3049, or PHY 2053. English requirement ENC 2210. CISE courses CIS 3020, CDA 3101, COP 3530, COT 3100, CEN 3031, COP 4600, COT 4501, EEL 3701, CIS 4914. One of COP 4720 or CAP 4800 Prior to registering for the course CIS 4914, a project must be approved by an adviser. CIS Electives: All students must take six hours approved by an adviser. The student also must satisfy the basic dis- tribution requirements. HONORS: A student must attain an overall GPA of 3.5. For high or highest honors a stu- dent also must take two additional CIS courses approved by the adviser, and, for highest hon- ors, attain an overall GPA of 3.8. A student must petition and get approval to attempt CIS honors at least one semester before graduation. THE MINOR: Refer to the Computer and Information Science and Engineering section in the College of Engineering. FRESHMAN YEAR NOTE: To fulfill the Gordon Rule requirement, select courses to satisfy 12 hours in communica- tion and 6 hours in computation.
