The B.F.A. curricula are intended for students who plan to enter profes- sional careers, allied fields or graduate study in either theatre or dance. Areas of specialization in the B.F.A. in Theatre include performance: acting or music theatre; and production: costume design, light- ing design or scene design. The area of special- ization in the B.F.A. in Dance is performance. The degree in dance performance is also offered at the New World School of the Arts campus in Miami. FINE ARTS In addition to the B.F.A., the Department of Theatre and Dance offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with a major in general theatre. For all programs in theatre, students should consult the undergraduate adviser as early as possible for additional information. Admission Admission to the Department of Theatre and Dance is selective. Before admission to the B.F.A. program, students in acting, music the- atre or dance must audition successfully, and those in design must present acceptable portfo- lios. Dance auditions may be scheduled throughout the academic year or during an active summer session. Prospective students audition in two technique classes of different styles; one class at intermediate level or higher. Resume is also required. Video audition tapes can also be considered. Performance audition or design portfolio review ratings may be used to establish the student's placement level in studio course sequences. Students must consult the department adviser for specific information regarding selective admission protocols. Audition/portfolio review ratings may be used to establish the student's placement level in stu- dio course sequences. All students seeking admission to the B.A. program must schedule a formal admission interview with the theatre academic adviser before starting the theatre preprofessional courses. Satisfactory Progress Students must receive a grade of C in all major courses and stand for periodic academic and artistic reviews. Ratings in these reviews may be used to establish the student's place- ment level in studio course sequences. All majors are guaranteed participation in the pro- duction program through the production and performance laboratory course and are expected to attend scheduled departmentals. Bachelor of Fine Arts Performance Curricula Students enrolled in performance: acting or music theatre will proceed through studio course work according to demonstrated profi- ciency. Placement will be determined by audi- tion. Students enrolled in theatre production: costume design, scene design and lighting design will complete course work in all three areas. Selected independent study, advanced electives and production assignments in THE 4950 focus the student's specialization. For further information consult department handbook or the undergraduate adviser. BFA in Theatre Performance: Acting Critical tracking criteria appears in bold. These courses must be completed in the term specified to remain on-track for the major.
