COLLEGES Theatre Acting, Music Theatre, Costume Design, Scene Design, Lighting-Technical Design No BFA MFA Theatre Yes BA 120 General Theatre acting Studies dance, design, general theatre Admission to the College Because of the many applicants and limita- tions in faculty and space, the college cannot accept all eligible applicants. Therefore, admis- sion to the College of Fine Arts is selective. A student's entire record, including educational objective, pattern of courses completed, quality of academic record, successful audition or port- folio review and test data will be considered. Applicants for art education and music educa- tion programs are required to present SAT or ACT test scores prior to admission to these pro- grams. Priority in admission will be given to those applicants whose potential indicates the greatest likelihood of success in the program. Native Freshmen and Sophomores Freshmen are admitted conditionally to the College of Fine Arts. All students in dance, music and theatre must present an audition or portfolio review before direct admission is obtained. Students in art and BA programs in art and theatre must successfully pass several pre- professional courses before direct admission is obtained. Students who are not making satisfac- tory academic progress may be required to seek admission to another college or to make alterna- tive academic plans. Gordon Rule Requirements Gordon Rule consists of two mathematics courses (6 credits) and four communication courses (12 credits) requiring a total of 24,000 written words (6,000 words each course). These courses may be completed throughout the degree program. College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) By law, all students seeking degree status at the junior-senior level at an institution in the State University System of Florida must have satisfactorily completed this test. Students are eligible to take the CLAST exam once they have earned 18 hours, and must complete the requirement by 60 hours. Students eligible to take the CLAST exam will be notified by the Office of the Registrar. Universal Tracking Students are encouraged to select a degree program when they enter the university. Degree requirements are delineated by terms, and stu- dents are required to take courses as listed each term to meet the degree requirements in a timely way. At the end of each term, a universal track- ing audit will be mailed, along with grades of courses taken. This degree tracking process will help students determine their current status. The universal tracking audit will show students what courses they have taken and what courses they lack to complete the degree program. Students' records are monitored each term to make sure they are on track. Students should consult department academic advisers regarding degree requirements, particularly before each registration. Transfer Students To be eligible for admission to the College of Fine Arts, a transfer student must satisfy the minimum requirements for admission as speci- fied in the Admissions section of this catalog. Additionally, all students must complete two sequential courses of foreign language in sec- ondary school or 8-10 semester hours at the postsecondary level, or document an equivalent level of proficiency. The primary criterion to any art, dance, music and theatre program is proficiency in the discipline. All students seeking admission to the College of Fine Arts must present an audi- tion or portfolio for review. Students attending four-year colleges should take courses similar to the first two years' preparatory courses for their intended program, as outlined in this catalog. Students attending Florida community col- leges are advised to complete the Associate of Arts degree and to plan their studies as follows: Preparation for Curricula in Art: Students are admitted to studio degree programs following completion of a satisfactory portfolio review. The community college program should include two basic design courses (which include color theory), two free-hand drawing courses and a year of art history. These courses transfer auto- matically. Other courses prefixed ART do not transfer automatically and will need evidence of achievement (i.e., portfolio). Preparation for Curricula in Dance: Students are admitted to the program following comple- tion of a satisfactory in-person or videotaped audition, a resume and acceptable proficiency in dance technique. The community college pro- gram should include two years of dance tech- nique, including ballet, modern and jazz, one year of dance composition, dance appreciation and production and performance courses or experience. Courses not available at the commu- nity college can be taken after transfer to UF. Preparation for Curricula in Music: Students are admitted to the program following comple- tion of a satisfactory in-person or tape-recorded audition and have achieved an acceptable profi- ciency in music skills. The community college program should include two years of music the- ory, including ear training, sight singing and keyboard harmony, two years of performance major study and two years of ensemble. Preparation for Curricula in Theatre: Students are admitted to the program following comple- tion of a satisfactory audition in performance or a portfolio review in production. The commu- nity college program should include two courses in acting, introduction to theatre, cos- tume and stage make-up, voice and stage move- ment, theatre practice, and production and per- formance courses or experiences. Courses not available at the community college will be taken after transfer to the university. Conditional Admission The professional programs of the college demand that preprofessional course work begin in the freshman year. Realizing that some schools may not offer all such courses, the col- lege occasionally provides an opportunity for admissable students to remove these deficien- cies. Qualified transfer students who have com- pleted an Associate of Arts degree from a Florida public institution and who show high potential but who have not completed all pre- professional courses may be admitted condi- tionally if space is available. Conditional admis- sion is not available to students with 90 or more transferrable hours. Students admitted condi- tionally will register for the courses necessary to eliminate deficiencies in the shortest time possi- ble. Until these deficiencies are removed they will be required to maintain a C (2.0) average to be eligible for continued registration and must follow a specified program as delineated by an adviser in the college. Financial Aid Students interested in part-time employ- ment, assistantships, fellowships, loans, prizes and awards are referred to individual depart- ments and information provided by the Office for Student Financial Affairs, 103 Criser Hall, Box 114025, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611-4025. Dance, music and theatre perfor- mance scholarships are available. Dean's List Undergraduate students who demonstrate excellence in their academic work by complet- ing a minimum of 12 hours credit in a term (6 hours credit in Summer A or B) and achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or better will earn a position on the Dean's List. Students earning grades of I, X, etc., are not eligible. Postbaccalaureate Study A student who has received a baccalaureate degree but who is not seeking admission to the Graduate School may, under certain conditions, be admitted as a postbaccalaureate student (6FA). The student must apply to enter the col- lege; admission is based on standard college/ department admissions policies. Students mak- ing application for admission under 6FA classi- fication must declare a specific major of study, which cannot be in the same program of study
