COLLEGES Special Education (K- grade 12) The special education program prepares stu- dents to seek a master's degree or non-degree postbaccalaureate program and recommenda- tion for initial teacher certification in two of the following four areas: mentally handicapped, specific learning disabilities, emotionally handi- capped and physically impaired. The program is divided into two tracks. The first emphasizes severely handicapping conditions and the sec- ond, mildly handicapping conditions. At the end of the first semester of study in the depart- ment, each student must select either Track I or Track 2. Students are required to submit First Aid and CPR certification prior to completion of the program. Unified Early Childhood (Pre-K- grade 3) The unified early childhood program pre- pares students to seek a master's degree or to complete a postbaccalaureate program and rec- ommendation for initial teacher certification. The components of the program include prepa- ration to teach young children with a wide vari- ety of capabilities through professional methods classes, clinical experiences, classroom experi- ences with preparation at two major levels: preschool (to age 4) and prekindergarten/pri- mary (age 3 to grade three). It also provides a prekindergarten handicapped endorsement. An endorsement is added to a teacher's certification to show a specific additional capability. During the three years and just prior to the completion of the program, students are expected to seek certification for First Aid and CPR. Students who fulfill the requirements for a bachelor's degree will not be certified for teacher education until they have completed a fifth year of study. Students who have met the requirements for the master's degree and who successfully complete the fifth year of studies will receive a master's degree and recommenda- tion for initial teacher certification in the levels noted above. This recommendation applies also to students who complete a postbaccalaureate program instead of an M.Ed. program.
