Yelton Office: Williamson 215 (392-0521) THE MAJOR: A majoring student needs a mini- mum of 33 hours in physics. These include PHY 3040, 3041, 3042, 3055L, 3056L, 4221, 4321, 4324, 4521, 4604, 4802L, 4803L and either 4422 or 4605. Specific mathe- matics and chemistry courses are also required. The Physics Department provides a rigorous program; all prospective physics majors should meet regularly with one of the Department advisers. HONORS: An honors program for physics majors is available through the College. Students should consult advisers in both the College and the Physics Department about this program, in which stu- dents maintain an overall grade point average of 3.5 or higher. For high or highest honors a student must also write a thesis. A project under PHY 4905 or PHY 4910L should begin by the middle of the junior year, so that the required thesis is finished five weeks before graduation. Tutorial and seminar courses are also a part of this program. Freshmen are encouraged to take PHY 2039 (if necessary), followed by PHY 3040-3041-3042-3055L- 3056L. This honors sequence starts each Fall and Spring semester. THE MINOR: A minor in physics is available for students who take 15 credit hours in physics, a mini- mum of 6 credits must be at least 4000 level. OVERSEAS STUDY: Students interested in study abroad should consult with a department advis- er or the Overseas Studies Office in 123 Tigert. GENERAL EDUCATION: The Department offers several courses at beginning or elementary lev- els which meet General Education criteria in category VII: Physical and Biological Sciences. Some mathemat- ical training is desirable or required for many of these courses; the level is indicated in parentheses.
