UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Degree programs in music include the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Arts. In the Bachelor of Music students may major in Music Theory, Composition, History and Literature, Church Music, Music Performance in (piano, voice, organ, harpsi- chord, or in any orchestral instrument, early instru- ments), Music Education, and in Combination with an Outside Field. In the Bachelor of Arts, students may major in Music Performance, Music Theory, Composition, and Music History/Literature. A prospective music major should consult the Department of Music adviser at his or her earliest opportunity, obtain detailed outlines of curricula and requirements and make application for admission to music major status. Admission to the program in Theory and Composition, leading to the Bachelor of Music degree, must be approved by the coordinator of Theory and Composition. Music Performance Scholarships are available. Courses offered in the Department of Music are divid- ed into six areas: Theory, Composition, History and Literature, Music Performance, Music Education, Ensemble. Enrollment is open to all qualified University students-those preparing for a professional goal in music and those seeking musical literacy for its cultural value. GRADUATE PROGRAMS The Department of Music offers the Master of Music degree in the following areas: Performance, Composition, Music Theory, Conducting (Choral and Instrumental), Pedagogy (Organ, Piano, and Voice), Accompanying, Music Education, Music Histoiy and Literature, and Sacred Music.The Department of Music offers the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music Education with specialization in Music Education, History and Literature, and Theory. MUSIC PERFORMANCE GENERAL POLICY Music Performance courses which are studio and class lessons in voice and musical instruments, are offered in voice, piano, organ, carillon, violin, viola, violoncello, string bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, ercussion, saxophone, harpsichord, recorder, and historical instruments. These courses are primarily for music majors. They are open to non-majors by special audition only. The student registering for the first time for courses in Music Performance reports to the Chairper- son of the Department of Music, who designates a fac- ulty member to audition and/or consult with the stu- dent and assign the student to the proper applied music course number. S-U Grades option and auditing of courses in Music Performance are not permitted. Performance Courses (1000 level) emphasize basic techniques. Music Education, Theory/Composition, Music Histo- ry/Literature, Church Music, and B.A. Majors, Sec- ondary and Non-majors take these courses in their first year. Performance Courses (2000 level) emphasize repertory and mastery of the basic techniques of the performing medium. Students majoring in perfor- mance will begin 2000 level courses in the first year. Performance Courses (3000 level) and (4000 level) are for advanced study. A student normally takes one of these courses for two semesters. Recitals must be presented at the University of Florida. Full perfor- mance faculty jury examination is required for admis- sion to 4000 level. The Performer's Certificate will be awarded at the discretion of the faculty to students who complete the graduation requirements of the (4000) level.
