DESCRIPTIONS This clinical rotation deals primarily with the diagno- sis, pathophysiology and essentials of therapy for var- ious gastroenterologic problems. The student learns to perform nasogastric intubation and to interpret gastric analysis. Instruction in secretion testing, small bowel biopsies, and proctosigmoidoscopies is provided. The student is further instructed in the correlation of the results of the various diagnostic procedures with the clinical course of the patient. PAS 4170 Rheumatology. F, S, SS. Students learn therapeutic techniques specifically related to the rheumatologic patient. Emphasis is placed on the history and physi- cal examination in a consulting service. PAS 4180 Pulmonology. The student develops skills in the performance of histories and physical examinations with emphasis on the respirato- ry system. The student will gain specific knowledge in procedures such as pulmonary function testing, inhalation therapy, arterial punctures, and the inter- pretation of chest roentgenograms. The student devel- ops an understanding of basic pulmonary diseases, their diagnosis, treatment, and complications. PAS 4182 Cardiology. F, S, SS. Credits: 3 to 5; May be repeated with change of topic with departmental approval. The cardiology rotation is designed to introduce the student to the basic cardiac abnormalities. The student is introduced to the EKG and the interpretation of both normal and abnormal tracings. The student is also exposed to the coronary care unit and its func- tions. The methods of performing necessary diagnos- tic procedures for the evaluation of disorders of the cardiovascular system are also studied. PAS 4184 Infectious Disease. F, S, SS. A clinical rotation surveying the findings and effects of numerous pathogenic bacteria and fungi as they relate to infectious disease processes. The student is actively involved in an inservice rotation, primarily a consulting service. The student is required to perform a complete history and physical examination on the patient and is further required to correlate laboratory findings with the clinical manifestations of the infec- tious disease. The student is further introduced to the manifestations of the illnesses and the rationale for therapy. PAS 4185 Gerontology. F, S, SS. Rotation in which the student becomes familiar with the common physical and psychological problems encountered by the geriatric patient. Increased expo- sure to common medical problems will be presented to include cardiac and respiratory insufficiencies, uri- nary tract infections, strokes, diabetes, mellitus and other diseases common to the elderly. In addition, the student will learn skills in case presentations and clin- ical research, as well as methodologies for approach- ing the rehabilitation of the aged in a team approach. The student will gain understanding of common der- matological diseases; their pathophysiology, diagno- sis, management and complications. The student will develop skills in performing common dermatological diagnostic studies, including KOH slides, skin biop- sies, etc. PAS 4200 General Surgery. F, S, SS. Credits: 3 to 5; May be repeated with change of topic with departmental approval. A clinical rotation exposing the student to a variety of clinical problems routinely seen on the surgical ser- vices. Emphasis is placed on pre-operative and post- operative management of the patient. Aseptic tech- nique and operating room principles are emphasized. Management of the surgical patient, both in the operat- ing room and on the ward, are basic to this rotation. PAS 4220 Plastic Surgery. F, S, SS. Credits: 3 to 5; May be repeated with change of topic with departmental approval. A clinical rotation in which the student is instructed in basic wound care. Also emphasized is surgical repair and management of the simple laceration. Some oper- ating room exposure is available for the more exten- sive care and repair of wounds. Exposure to burn treatment is also provided. PAS 4240 Orthopedic Surgery. F, S, SS. Credits: 3 to 5; May be repeated with change of topic with departmental approval. A clinical rotation providing exposure to the emergen- cy room orthopedic patient as well as pre-operative and post-operative care of the surgical patient. In-hos- pital management as well as out-patient management of the orthopedic patient is emphasized. PAS 4260 Neurosurgery. F, S, SS. During this clinical rotation, the student is taught an understanding of the problems unique to the diagno- sis, treatment and management of the neurosugrical patient. The student gains experience in the operating room and further gains a working knowledge of the diagnostic techniques utilized. PAS 4270 Urology. F, S, SS. Credits: 3 to 5; May be repeated with change of topic with departmental approval. The urologic rotation deals with both in-patient and out-patients. Emphasis is placed on the indications as well as side effects of the various diagnostic and ther- apeutic procedures unique to the urologic service. The student is also provided exposure to the pre- and post-operative care of the urologic patient. PAS 4280 Otolaryngology. F, S, SS. Credits: 3 to 5; May be repeated with change of topic with departmental approval. The student is introduced to the otolaryngology clinic and the kinds of patients most commonly seen in that clinic. Emphasis is placed on the common ear, nose, and throat problems. The student receives careful instruction in the proper use of the appropriate instru- ments. PAS 4300 Pediatrics. F, S, SS. This general pediatric rotation is designed to intro- duce the student to the childhood illnesses and nor- mal variations of growth and development. The stu- dent is encouraged to seek out third party histories and perform pediatric physical examinations. The stu- dent is further introduced to the newborn nursery as well as pediatric out-patient clinics and emergency rooms. PAS 4305 Pediatrics, Genetics and Metabolism. F, S, SS. During this clinical rotation, the student is exposed to pediatric patients with either genetic or metabolic dis- orders. The student is required to complete PAS 4300, General Pediatrics, prior to this rotation. The student gaines expertise in following the genetic lines of a pediatric patient. The student is also exposed to the common metabolic problems seen most often on the service. PAS 4400 Family Practice. F, S, SS. This clinical rotation is designed to introduce the stu- dent to the family practice setting and the interperson- al relationships developed in that setting. The student is exposed to the family practice type patient and other members of the family unit. The student is exposed to the common diseases treated by the prima- ry care practitioner and further exposed to other members of the health care team. PAS 4404 Student Health. F, S, SS. Credits: 3 to 5; May be repeated with change of topic with departmental approval. This clinical rotation is provided to the student who desires additional exposure to a clinical setting. The student will perform history and physical examina- tions and will have a further opportunity to be exposed to the illnesses and injuries common to uni- versity students. PAS 4405 Public Health. The student will rotate in a public health department where he/she will be exposed to and participate in a wide variety of common public health problems. The student will learn how a public health department works and what services are generally available. The P.A. student will participate in nutrition counseling, family planning, environmental health studies, V.D. screening and reporting of communicable diseases. The emphasis of this rotation will be to expose the stu- dent to the practice of medicine in a public health department. PAS 4420 Preceptorship. F, S, SS. Credits: 3 to 5; May be repeated with change of topic with departmental approval. A clinical rotation primarily in a community based private practitioner's office. It is designed to introduce the student to the community setting. The student will make rounds with the physician and assist in his or her office practice. Preferably, this preceptorship would be in a rural setting with a physician who is seeking to employ a physician assistant. PAS 4500 Obstetrics and Gynecology. F, S, SS. This clinical rotation is designed to introduce the stu- dent to the obstetrical service, the management of pregnancy, labor and delivery. It is further designed to introduce the student to pre- and post-natal compli- cations. The rotation is also designed to introduce the student to the common gynecological problems and management of common female abnormalities. PAS 4600 Emergency Room. F, S, SS. Credits: 3 to 5; May be repeated with change of topic with departmental approval. The students are introduced to the busy emergency rooms of the major medical centers. They are exposed to the acutely ill and traumatized patients. The stu- dents learn to perform appropriate history and physi- cal examinations on the acutely ill patient. Emphasis is placed on management and support measures in situ- ations which are life-threatening. PAS 4905 Directed Readings/Independent Study. Credits: 1 to 4; Prereq: Permission of program.
