Balaban Office: Grinter 470 (392-2422) THE MAJOR: The Department offers a major in East Asian Languages and Literatures with concentra- tions in either Chinese or Japanese. A majoring stu- dent needs a minimum of 30 credit hours of 3000 or above level courses. The Chinese concentration requires the following courses: CHI 3410-11, CHT 3110, CHT 3124, CHW 4130, CHI 4850. The Japanese concentration requires the following courses: JPN 3400-01, JPT 3100, JPT 3120, (as substitutes for JPT 3100 or JPT 3120 anyone of the following may be taken: JPT 3130, JPT 3140, JPT 3150), JPW 4130, JPN 4850. Both concentrations require at least one of the following courses: CHI 3500, JPN 3500, FOL 3932, ASN 4905 To complete the 30 hours, a student has several options within and outside the Department's offerings. Majors should consult with the appropriate Undergraduate Coordinator before preregistration every semester. Prospective majors should be mindful of the prerequisites to CHI 3410-11 (Third-Year Chinese) and JPN 3400-01 (Third-Year Japanese). Both concentrations require LIN 3010 as an exit require- ment not counted towards the 30 hours. It is recom- mended that a student take this course before either CHI 4850 or JPN 4850. HONORS: For graduation with honors, a student must attain a 3.5 overall upper-division average. For graduation with high honors or highest honors the following is required: (1) 3.8 GPA in the required 30 hours (2) 3.5 GPA overall (3) successful completion of a senior level tutorial under ASN 4905, and (4) a the- sis. The student will receive high or highest honors on the recommendation of the faculty. THE MINOR: A minor in East Asian Languages and Literatures is available for students who take 15 credit hours distributed as follows: Second-Year Chinese or Japanese (6 credit hours), any two courses at the 3000 or above level which have the following course prefixes: CHI, CHT, CHW, JPN, JPT, JPW (6 credit hours), one course with exclusive reference to either China or Japan outside the Department (3 credit hours). OVERSEAS STUDY: A year-long full tuition exchange program is available at Kansai Gaidai, near Osaka, Japan, which offers courses in Japanese lan- guage (all levels) and area studies focusing on Japan and its international role. Students with Asian Studies are given admission priority. UF-Ain Shams Arabic language intensive sum- mer program is available in Cairo, Egypt. Prerequisite: 10 hours beginning course or the equivalent. Six cred- its transferrable to UF. Cost: $1,645 approximately for fees, housing, local transportation and a week long trip to Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea resort of Hurghada. Year-long exchange programs are available at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, for the study of Swahili, and at Obafemi Awolowo University, in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, for the study of Yoruba. Language study constitutes one-third of the academic program, with other disciplines (politics, history, literature, art, etc.) completing the schedule. Students with a GPA of 2.5 and a background in African Studies and/or African language study will be given priority. GENERAL EDUCATION: The Department of African and Asian Languages and Literatures is inter- national and multicultural in outlook and in its course offerings. General Education courses have therefore been selected to give students a good insight into the humanities, social sciences and the international per- spective of the African, Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew and Japanese components of the department. The Department's General Education courses encourage independent, clear and relational thinking, a probe into the various facets of cultures, an appreciation and a better understanding of the specificities, values and aesthetics of other cultures.
