COLLEGES First Semester Students should complete at least 15 credits of preprofessional course work with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The first courses in the general chemistry and general biology sequences should be completed with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The precalculus course should be taken in this first semester. Second Semester Students should complete at least 15 credits of preprofessional course work (total = at least 30 by the end of the first year) with a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Calculus I course and the gen- eral chemistry and general biology courses should be completed with a GPA of 2.75 or higher. Third Semester Students should begin the organic chemistry and physics courses. The minimum GPA in sci- ence and math courses at the end of the third semester (inclusive of general chemistry 8 cr., biology 8 cr., mathematics 6-7 cr., organic chem- istry 3-4 cr., and physics 4 cr.) should be a 2.8. The GPA for 45 credits of preprofessional cours- es (sciences, mathematics, humanities, social studies, and English courses) should be 3.0 or higher. Students should take the PCAT after completing the general chemistry and general biology courses and average at the 65th per- centile or greater on the 5 sections of the exami- nation. Fourth Semester Students should complete organic chemistry and physics courses and maintain at least a 2.8 GPA in science and math courses within the preprofessional curriculum. The GPA for 68 credits of preprofessional course work should be at least a 3.0. Fifth Semester Students may require an additional semester to complete General Education or preprofes- sional course work during the Summer prior to the beginning of the fall semester in the College of Pharmacy. Students should realize that the aggregate GPA for the 105 students admitted over the past several years has ranged between 3.1 and 3.4. During this time period the aggregate mean PCAT percentile scores have averaged at the 65th percentile. Students with prepharma- cy GPA's less than 3.0 or science/math GPA's less than 2.8 have less probability of gaining admission to the college. Students with GPA's less than 2.5 after 30 to 45 credits of prephar- macy course work will not be in an academi- cally competitive position for admission to the College of Pharmacy. Applicants will be notified of the action of the Admissions Committee following regular meetings which begin in the spring semester. Decisions of the committee are full acceptance (if all prepharmacy requirements are met), con- ditional acceptance (if prepharmacy courses are to be completed prior to the fall semester date for entry into the college), deferral (if more information is needed to make a final decision), alternate (for students who are qualified but not selected within the quota for the class), and denial. All decisions by the committee are usu- ally completed during May. START OF PROGRAM Since only one sequence of the required pro- fessional courses is offered each year, new stu- dents are only admitted to the College of Pharmacy at the start of the fall semester. Appli- cants who are not selected should notify the Office of Admissions in writing if they wish to be considered for admission for the following academic year. All pharmacy students must be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as they enter the College of Pharmacy. An instructional session on CPR will be arranged during orienta- tion. Students are encouraged to obtain training prior to entering the college. A copy of the certi- fication for CPR shall be placed in the student's file in the Office for Student Affairs. New students are admitted to the College of Pharmacy in August each year. Students in prepharmacy should plan their course schedule for each term so that the course requirements are satisfied by August of the year expected to enter the College of Pharmacy. Students should plan to take all science courses in the fall and spring semesters, if possible. Organic Chemistry should preferably be taken in the fall and spring semesters. PREPHARMACY PROGRAM This program combines the university-wide General Education Requirement (described in the Lower Division section of this catalog) with a preprofessional plan for pharmacy. Wherever possible, students should use the courses required in the prepharmacy sequence to satisfy the distribution portion of the General Educa- tion Requirement. All prepharmacy courses should be completed prior to beginning the pro- fessional curriculum. The General Education course requirements are shown in capital letters; specific require- ments for prepharmacy students are listed below them. The General Education Require- ment for the Physical and Biological Sciences is 9 credits; however, additional course work in this area is required in the preprofessional pro- gram. CLEP credit cannot be used to complete any of the prepharmacy course requirements. Stu- dents holding such credit are eligible to enter higher level courses. COMPOSITION (see note 1) (6 credits) ENC 1101 Expository and Argumentative Writing (3) and ENC 1102 Writing About Literature (3). LITERATURE AND THE ARTS (6 credits) Courses may be taken in Architecture, Art, Classics, Literature, Music, Theater plus any course in Foreign Literature. HISTORICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL STUDIES (6 credits) Courses may be taken in History, Philosophy, Political Science and Religion. INTERNATIONAL STUDIES AND DIVERSITY (6 credits) Courses may be taken that focus on foreign languages, other nations or cultures, or on race, ethnicity, or gender. Students who choose the language option are encouraged to take the entire six credits in that language. SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES (6 credits) Courses may be taken in Anthropology, Criminology and Law, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. One course should be taken in Economics [ECO 2013 Principles of Macroeconomics (3) or ECO 2023 Principles of Microeconomics (3)]. MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES (see note 2) (6 credits) MAC 1142 Precalculus: Algebra and Trigonometry (4) MAC 3233 Survey of Calculus I (3), or MAC 3311 Analytical Geometry and Calculus I (4). Note 2: All students are required to take the Cal- culus Placement Examination, given each term by the Mathematics department. Students who can take Calculus I as the first course in mathe- matics may take courses in Statistics, Computer and Information Sciences (except COC 3400 or CRM 4121), or Philosophy (PHI 2100 only), or Mathematics (except MAE 3810) to meet the requirement for the other 3 credits of mathemat- ical sciences. Note 3: The General Education Requirement is met with 9 credits of Physical and Biological Sci- ence courses. The additional 23 credits are pre- professional course requirements necessary for a solid science foundation for the pharmacy cur- riculum. Note 4: All students are required to take the Chemistry Placement Examination, given each term by the Chemistry department, prior to ini- tial registration in CHM 2040 or CHM 2045. Stu- dents who achieve an acceptably high score on the examination may proceed with CHM 2045, 2045L, 2046, 2046L sequence. Students achieving a qualifying score should take the CHM 2040, 2041, 2045L, 2046, 2046L course sequence.
