Generic BSN Studies The upper division major in Nursing Studies is five semesters in length and provides profes- sional experience in a variety of clinical settings. These settings include hospitals, community health agencies and clinics, primary service institutions, and homes. Nursing courses include extensive classroom activities correlated with supervised observation and practice in pri- mary, secondary, tertiary, restorative, and con- tinuing care settings. Courses in the first two semesters focus on the functional health patterns of the adult patient and on various states of wellness and ill- ness including supporting laboratory experi- ences with adult patients on medical-surgical units in hospital settings. Courses in health assessment, pharmacotherapeutics and patho- physiology provide additional theoretical con- tent for the application of the nursing process. An introductory course directed toward profes- sional socialization provides the student with the opportunity to analyze historical, cultural, legal, and ethical issues in professional nursing practice. In semesters three and four, courses focus on the specialty areas of maternal-newborn nurs- ing, child health nursing, mental health nursing, and family/community health nursing. The conceptual courses for each specialty area are accompanied by laboratory courses that provide for the application of the nursing process with clients in a variety of clinical settings. Addition- al supporting courses include research, psy- chopathology, and electives. The second professional socialization course continues the student's analysis of the legal, ethical, economic, political, and practice issues of the nursing pro- fession. The fifth semester permits the student to focus on the concepts of complex nursing care with acutely ill children and adults who may be in tertiary, special care, or rehabilitation set- tings. The practicum is the culminating labora- tory experience in the program and provides opportunity for integration and synthesis of professional role behaviors. A course in nursing leadership and management supports the practicum.
