They are also the traditional basis for higher education. The Col- lege's program offers breadth and expert knowledge in many specialized areas. Over 23 departments and 15 academic centers and insti- tutes extend from American Studies to Zoology. The teaching faculty, more than 600 strong, are all active scholars working to create new know- ledge through research. Besides being responsible for its own upper division and graduate level majors, the college also educates the vast majority of UF's freshmen and sophomores. These students' courses foster creative thinking and critical reasoning, while introducing them to a broad range of know- ledge and experience. In an increasingly techni- cal society, it is more important than ever that tomorrow's leaders possess an intellectual foun- dation based on a well-rounded and compre- hensive education one that will serve them well throughout their lives. The LS classification applies to all UF fresh- men and sophomores as well as those upper division students pursuing Liberal Arts and Sci- ences degrees. Some freshmen and sophomores change from the LS classification to another as they seek admission to one of the other 14 undergraduate degree-granting colleges. Admission Students may enter the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at any time after entering the university. Before making an application, how- ever, there are some general guidelines that should be kept in mind. In addition, each department may have specific course require- ments that must be fulfilled before admission. All students should enter the college by the time they reach 60 credit hours. By that time they must have 1) completed the Communica- tion and Computation (Gordon Rule) require- ment, 2) passed the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST), 3) completed approxi- mately one half of their General Education courses, 4) completed required pre-major cours- es with a grade of "B" or higher, and 5) acquired a cumulative grade point average of a 2.0 to 2.8 depending on the intended major. Applications to the major should be submit- ted to the Office of the University Registrar by the deadlines printed in the university calendar at the front of this catalog. Admission to each upper division major requires a record of academic achievement, usu- ally B's in entry-level courses in the proposed major. Admission to the sciences usually requires completion of the chemistry or physics sequences. Admission to any of the foreign lan- guage majors usually requires B's in the inter- mediate levels of the languages. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has a number of programs with selective admission. Each department has established benchmark standards for admission to its majorss. These standards are listed below. In addition to the specific courses and grade point averages, all CATALOG
