Elective Requirement
 A minimum of 124 semester hours are
required for a BA in the College of Fine Arts. An
elective is any course taken outside of the stu-
dent's major department. Unless it is an
approved minor (which may include both lower
and upper division courses), electives must be
chosen from upper division courses in the Col-
lege of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Col-
lege of Fine Arts. Students must take 10 hours of
some foreign language or show a minimum pro-
ficiency in a single foreign language by taking a
placement test. If the proficiency is met, it does
not reduce the number of credit hours required
for the degree. Foreign language credit may not
be obtained through CLEP examinations. A stu-


dent may select for upper division elective cred-
it up to 9 hours from college within the univer-
sity other than CLAS and CFA.
 All students pursuing the BA degree must
consult with a departmental adviser before
attempting the elective portion of this program.

Graduate Study in Theatre
 The Master of Fine Arts in Theatre program
ordinarily requires three years. It challenges and
focuses the advanced artist-scholar through rig-
orous classroom, laboratory, studio, and perfor-
mance studies. The degree prepares students for
professional entry in the areas of performance
art and/or teaching by providing advanced


training and application of skills essential to the
theatre artist. Specialization is offered in two
areas: acting and design.
 In addition to the M.F.A., the Department of
Theatre offers an emphasis in the College of Lib-
eral Arts and Sciences, Department of Speech,
leading to the Doctor of Philosophy. The Ph.D.
degree offers the advanced scholar-artist a rig-
orous theoretical, historical, and critical course
of study in the classroom and laboratory with
studio and performance work required. For
graduate programs in theatre, students should
consult the Theatre department chair or gradu-
ate coordinator.
